My thoughts...

I'm not in love right now, but I'd love to be. And, if I were, it'd be dead easy to see how things might go - holding hands, mugs of tea, chats, laughter, a few arguments about my dislike about doing the dishes, more chats, meeting and liking the guy's family, big questions and big answers about us being together for the rest of our days.

I'm not in love, but I'd love to be, I'd love all that. I'm not sure that I am pushed on the big white dress and cake, not the biggest deal for me. That all seems a bit silly. I'm keener on the speeches, and the dancing. And the promise. 

To be fully honest, I think what I'd like the most is the permanency, the solidity of two people promising to continuing to love each other irrespective of the days. And, underneath all that, knowing that the solidity of the promise is backed up by the state and the law. 

All of my friends have said that they felt differently when they married the person, even though some did not expect that change. What they thought of as being a permanent and steadfast relationship took on a new dimension when the solemn vow in front of family, friends and the state was made. 

It's like the blood and bone and sinew of our state, the law and the constitution, have cemented their love into something that feels unbreakable to them. The idea of it being marriage, instead of a kind of fabricated almost marriage, that idea would make a difference to any of my friends who are lucky enough to be married and that gap must make a difference to gay people.

Those who want the sacrament of marriage can rest assured that it will not be changed. Those who have the sacrament of marriage can rest assured that their marriage will not be changed. The sacrament will be as it always was. And, the institution that is civil marriage will too remain as it always was. It's just that, if it is passed, we won't discriminate against a specific subset of romantic love. We won't tell people that their love is second class, that their love can not sit at the front of the bus. We won't tell people that my hypothetical relationship is good enough for marriage but their very real, tangible love-match is not.

The legal protections and recognition of civil marriage will be available to all people, and the only qualification for civil marriage will be love. 

Of course, I would take the point a step further and say that we should vote yes, not because it is within our gift to do so, but because it is the right thing to do. Love is love; equal is equal; marriage is marriage. Any dilutions belie those fundamental truths.

Sniff. Give me a moment. I love weddings and the foreverness of the promise renders me weepy and speechless (ask anyone, I'm a happy mess at weddings).

As a side effect of all this, I find myself thinking of friends who have spent months and years trying to explain their sexuality to family and friends. It makes me sad that coming out has been a problem for them and it has been difficult for many. What makes me happy is the slow sure joy in the last few years of learning that this process of coming out has become easier. The freedom that follows being truthful about who they are has been followed by the joy of acceptance. I kind of think we are shrugging off some of the nosy neighbour judgement old thing that made many people miserable. 

Can we pause for a moment to be happy about that progress? It is good for us as humans to let other humans be. It's just so good. Tolerance feels good to the person giving and to the person receiving.

So, the side effect of letting gay people be protected and recognized in the most important relationship they have is pretty important. It is through this marriage equality referendum that we, as a society, as a country, we get to whisper and shout and sing our acceptance of not only their unions, but also of their difference and sameness. It must, surely, change the coming out process for young people to think that the whole country voted and most people said "you're grand, not a bother, it's your own business who you like". It must. It must say to any young person that they are different, in the same way every person is unique and different, and very acceptable and equally at home for all that.

I try to love my family members because we are all different but we are all made of the same stuff (I don't always succeed, it's hard to love them when the slagging over dinner or the stealing of clothes get a bit beyond the acceptable levels). I try to love my country men and women because we are all different but we are all made of the same stuff (I don't always succeed there either, it's hard to love them when someone eggs your car or splashes you when you're at the bus stop).

I think the vote on Friday week is just the enactment of that same family and country love. 

Single though I am, I'd be heartbroken if someone said that my love was not good enough to be recognized in the same way everybody else's is. And I'd be gutted to have someone do that to my friends or family. So, as a person who tries to practice tolerance but fails daily, I'll be voting yes in the hopes that this big hug of lovely inclusion that we can give on Friday week might mitigate my other daily failings. I'll be saying yes for another person (for many gay people) to get to say their very emphatic and loving yes. I'll be saying yes for you and your family and your friends too.

I'm not religious but it feels pretty right to me. It feels like my own kind of enlightenment. I'm not in love and I'd love to be, but in the meantime, I'm a bit in love with the country we are growing to be.

Want a decent communications/PR/political campaign plan? Channel Rory McIlroy

Right, so I'm pretty chuffed with myself, and pretty annoyed at the same time. Over the last few weeks, I've been watching with awe as an Irish man won the U.S. Open Golf Championships.


I watched him fail at try to hold his lead in the Masters, saw it dissolve, and wondered how, at 21 years of age, you hold your nerve with an audience of millions. I wondered how, having lost your nerve, you can possibly re-build it again, under such public scrutiny.


So, I whooped and cheered with all the rest when he made the most comeback-ish of comebacks at the Open. And, his comments about how he made it happen made me think. On foot of a general election campaign just over five months ago, the tactics he used to get himself together to win sounded to me like the best and most concise list of pointers for running a political campaign that I had ever heard.


And, here's why I am chuffed - my thoughts must have fairly on the mark, because the Republicans in the US seem to agree with me (regardless of your political outlook, you can’t deny that they know how to win campaigns). And, here's why I am annoyed - why on earth didn't I write it down at the time. Why file it away for another time?


So, while my tea was brewing yesterday, I got my brain brewing too. It occurred to me that McIlroy's winning tactics were the ammunition for a great political campaign, but they would also apply to any communications or PR plan. I'm going to outline how what he did works.


McIlroy’s 9 Commandments


1. Decide what you want.


Establish your end goal. What are the fundamentals of any campaign – what are the objectives; who do we want to reach; what is the bottom line. Decide what political/PR objective you have and chart the sensible way to get there.

Put the bottom line on a card, tape it to your desk or someplace you can see it very easily (the front of the folder for the project, the notice board). The end goal should be summarised in one sentence – I want to win the US Open; I want to get coverage in 4 national media outlets for my event; I want to increase our market share by 3% by using social media; I want to put a plan in place that can reduce reputational damage in the event of a communications crisis. If you know the aim of the project in one sentence, you can filter the important from the irrelevant, and prioritise the work.

Sticking to decisions is a less fraught experience when you are the decision-maker – you call the shots. We have all experienced the hair-tearingly frustrating scenario of a colleague, or client, or boss who simply cannot buy into the process. Worse still is someone who has bought in the whole way through the project and changes the direction at the last minute. While every instance of this cannot be eliminated, it can be easier to manage that person if you have your simple one sentence summary – you can say, so this aim that we had established as the fundamental reason for undertaking the work – has that changed now? Be able to go back to that decision and reiterate the original goal. With succinctness comes clear thinking. The most uncertain of people can become re-certained when they are reminded of the clear direction you had when you started the project.

2. Be cocky.


McIlroy’s number two commandment seems to emanate from his conversations with Jack Nicklaus. He has always had a cocky way of playing – at age 10, age 14, and at age 22. People have tried to dampen this, tame it. And, it seems, there have been times that he has allowed that to happen. But, McIlroy decided in light of the US Masters to once again play that style of golf, the mental style of a winner at the Open. Nicklaus encouraged him to play to win, to put pressure on himself to be a winner. And that pressure and desire to win had to come from himself, not from any external source.

I think it must operate the same way for any project but particularly for any communications project: you have to want the tender to work for it and to win it; you have to want to win the election to make it happen; you have to want to win those new customers by communicating your new product.

I don’t mean that you should be an unbearable person who believes that they are the best. I mean that you should be cocky, walk the walk, talk the talk, play the golf. Be sure of yourself and your plan, know that you have the stuff to get the job done.

3. Know your stuff.

When you listen to McIlroy talk about his victory, he is talking about very specific things, he knows every hole on the golf course, talks about the line of a ball, the distance to a particular bunker, the difficulty of any given putt. He has put in the work, he knows the course.

We should all be thinking this way about any project. For a client, we should know what caused problems when we worked for them before, we should know their strengths and weaknesses, we should know their competitors strengths and weaknesses. In our own business, we should know who in a company derailed a project and who resurrected it, who will speak up and who will stay silent, we should already know the hard questions and how to find the answers to them.

McIlroy knows his stuff, his research is done, the has played the course, watched the videos of it, listened to the weather forecast, picked his clothes the night before…

Preparation is a tool in communications that people feel is endless. You cannot prepare for every eventuality or research every imaginable question or issue or crisis. I’ve been considering crisis communications plans lately in relation to politics. All along, I had thought that they can’t be of as much use in politics as they can be in food production, or film production where the potential crises are more predictable (i.e. what is our plan if we have to do a product recall, or if the weather prevents a week of filming). Now, I think that there is no room for that way of thinking any more in politics or in crisis communications. Things simply move too fast to allow us expect to be able to deal with instantaneous issues blown in to crisis. We need to have the coping skills to deal with a crisis and the communication is part of those coping skills. If your crisis communications plan outlines the essential steps to take if an education issue goes wrong, and a health issue, and an economic issue, and a company safety issue, you will find that the core actions in any of these plans remain the same. By planning and researching and learning a skill-set, or in this case, by doing a crisis communications plan, you will know your stuff and it puts you in control.

4. Don’t look at the leaderboard.

This one kind of rocked me to the core. It seemed to me to smack of the kind of belief few people can operate on. And, I’ve been thinking about it ever since.

If you had been where McIlroy was during the Masters, watching the leaderboard, seeing every birdie for every other golfer as a fresh and piercing defeat, you would have been slowly losing the tournament with every shot by every other golfer without playing even one shot of your own. It seemed suddenly so obvious to me. You play your own game, or you lose.

In communications, or politics, if you are only reactionary, you will lose. In sports, if you are looking the leaderboard, you are already losing. Why would you be checking the leaderboard, when you already have your next shot planned, and the one after that, and the one after that? If you focus on others, you are not focusing on yourself and channelling your energy as powerfully as possible. Brian Cody, the Kilkenny hurling manager summed it up when he said: “Ignore the opposition, do what you are doing and do it well.”

5. Mini-goals = gold.


Break it down.

McIlroy wanted to win the Open, that was his over-arching goal in a sentence.

McIlroy broke down each day’s play, he wanted to have four rounds with with a nice round sixties score each day.

McIlroy broke down each hole’s play, he wanted a birdie on the 9th hole, or the 10th.

McIlroy broke down each shot, he wanted to be on the green near the water, or ten feet from the putt.

Any communications plan, or PR campaign, or political campaign can be broken down into McIlroy’s golden mini-goals. Any campaign should be a series of lists in order manageable in any case. If someone is sick, or fired, or promoted or demoted, another person is handed the list and the project can be carried out. Project management is the science of lists – a list of key messages, a list of events to meet people to deliver those messages, a list of physical things you need to do have at each event, a list of the key components to putting those materials together, a list of media contacts.

Conquer the lists and you have conquered McIlroy’s golden mini-goals.

6. Do not dwell on mistakes or negatives.

Analyse the mistakes, understand why you made them, figure out what you omitted, what you didn’t prepare enough, what you can work to fix for the next time. But, don’t let the mistakes or the analysis rule you or control you. Learn from the mistakes, counteract the negative and then let it go.
In any communications plan, you need to be able to tinker with the messages, take on board changing situations in the company, in the larger world, but allowing mistakes or negativity to reproduce is not helpful. Feeling defeated breeds defeat.

If you have not properly dealt with the issues that have arisen, then listen to the negative feeling and go back to Commandment 3. Know your stuff, do your research, find out who has solved a problem like this before, adopt their techniques, their rationale and fix the problem. 

If you have properly dealt with the issue that has arisen, then the negative feelings are simply not necessary. Flush.

Learn about yourself. Learn when you are being negative because there is a kernel of a problem with your project, and also when you are being negative because you are worrier.

7. Take a breather.

Open your eyes to the big universe and welcome some perspective. There has been much criticism levelled at McIlroy’s off-week plans in recent days. People have criticised him and his coach, pointing at the Wimbledon trip, trips home, celebrations with family and friends, media work, even the trip to Haiti.

But, I think it stands at the core of his success. McIlroy is 22 and if submerged in the game of golf, he plays with total focus and it is part of his daily routine.

But, he needs switch-off time. He is capable of taking time off, replenishing his energy and enthusiasm so that he can be fresh when he goes back on the course. Taking time off in itself helps with concentration, but especially when you combine it with something fulfilling or captivating.

Who is to say exactly what Haiti offered McIlroy, or what Wimbledon offered him – those are personal moments in his life where he should not be obliged to tell his fans every golf or non-golf thing. He should have nights out, and nights in and normality.

And, so should we all. Rest and perspective have to be parts of any project and campaign and, like McIlroy, we have to be able to see bigger things in the Universe, and realize that failure or success were not the only things in the world to consider. That sense of the largeness of the world around you has to be a part of sport and of work, or any defeat would disarm and demotivate you.

Aside from all that, you might have a stroke of genius for a campaign while kayaking in West Cork!

8. Take the positivity where you find it.

McIlroy was not listening to the media saying his career was over, comparing him to Novotna, another sportsperson disarmed by defeat. He was listening to his family and his coaches and his fans and his own inner belief telling him he was great and he could do it.

Take heed of the people providing solutions, and support, and smiles, and tea. All of those things get you to the end-point in a project. Think of one of the people you most care about, imagine them pointing a finger at you, and saying: “You can do it, I just know you can."

Is that not so much more motivating and empowering than negativity?

9. ENJOY it.

McIlroy blogged the week before the US Open that he was looking forward to the Open. After everything he had been through in the US Masters (the criticism, scrutiny and disappointment), he wanted to play and wanted to win too, but most importantly, he just wanted to play.

The McIlroy walk is a thing to watch, you cannot help but smile when you watch him walk down the green, following the ball as fast as he can. We should all have such a walk to work.

Forget about wanting to win, just want to play.

Is Facebook a good social media platform for B2B?

Let's create a hypothetical scenario.

You are working in a small organisation in Ireland where you manufacture a product for sale. 99% of your income comes from sale of this product in bulk to large companies in Ireland, Europe and further afield. Your product plays a key part in their end-product, which goes largely unseen by end consumers who are unaware that your company plays a part in the client's finished product.

Essentially, your markets are exports in bulk and the people you want to market yourself to are major buyers in your existing and prospective clients' organisations. You routinely tailor your production to match the specific product requirements of your clients and this flexibility is one major positive that you want to relay to these core group of buyers.

Only 1% of your income comes from retail directly to consumers, through traditional shops and supermarkets. This is a largely static part of your business over a number of years.

Because you are a small organisation, you need to put in place a communciations and social media strategy to improve your bottom line, but your expertise levels internally and resources in terms of man-hours are a major concern.

At present, you have no online presence - no website, no social media, nothing.

Do you:
a) Go headlong for Facebook - it's free, it has the highest number of active users in terms of media strategy, and it has the potential to reach the most retail consumers?
b) Jump right into a company website, Facebook, Twitter, Linked-In, Flickr, Youtube, and other other appropriate pllatforms, using a broad scatter-gun approach, hoping it will pay dividends across the board?
c) Pick one of these channels and use it for a month to investigate how well it works for your business, then another, then another, and pick which had the best results after six or so months to truly make your own?
d) Beef up your website to control your own message at source, and hope this will filter through to better bottom line resources?
e) Be strategic, using a number of components, start up your website and pick your platforms to match where improvements will truly add to your bottom line, and focus on those?

Do you find, while thinking that you know nothing about social and online media, that you have an opinion about this hypothetical? Having a light-bulb moment?

You do not need to be a social media guru to decide your own social media strategy and be in charge of driving that strategy. You have the building blocks to put together a Social Media strategy for your organisation, and those building blocks are based on common-sense, and basic Marketing for Dummies ideas.

There are definitely some instances where it Facebook is the best platform for social media. Ditto for Twitter. Or for Linked-In.

Check out the banks in Ireland - they are picking and choosing the social media they feel best reflects them. They are using company websites for their own controlled message, and at present, largely steering clear of social media with interactivity - the negatives out-weigh the positives in that regard at present because the negative interactions might be unmanageable at present. They are dabbling with social media for Corporate Social Responsibility projects, or for specific campaigns, where they have used common sense and decided it is an effective tool.

However, in a small organisation like the hypothetical outlined above, where man-hours are tight and ROI is key - use your head. Don't follow the crowd... Match your actions with where improvements in your branding and marketing can create the most revenue.

In the case I created above, I would be inclined to say that a company website highlighting the quality of the product, and the flexibility of the business is key - with detailed information about your capabilities, it will help major buyers when you direct them to your website, or when they find it on spec themselves. If you couple that with a Linked-In campaign to target a new potential buyer a week and generate leads for business, you would be going a long way to have an online space, inform your current clients about your existing products and potential products, grow your potential client base.

Along-side these website steps, you are taking actions which match your company's lack of expertise in this field (setting up a website, or Linked-In page are well within any company's capabilities) and your concerns that large investments of time by employees will not bear fruit. In time, the company could use twitter to build a relationship with kindred companies, or clients, using the short 'n' sweet 140 characters as a bullet point way to showcase new products, changes in your business.

Et, voila. There you have it, your very own home-grown social media strategy, or at very least, the foundations upon which is can grow.

And, the answer to the question? Is Facebook the best platform for business to business? Not necessarily.


  1. Don't be afraid of social media as being beyond you. It is different to your core business, but not rocket science.


  2. Don't be a lemming following the crowd devoting hours to Facebook, or to any other platform, if you believe your target customers aren't there.
Would you go to every single health-related conference in the country, hoping to meet people to buy your adhesive for plasters product, just because conferences are the new fad? Or would you go to the one conference plaster manufacturers would attend so you can meet the most relevant clients in the one place, begin a relationship with them, and hope to grown your business as a result?

Common sense should dictate. As it does in your business.

First Blog Post

Hey y'all,

I'll be posting regular ideas, links and articles here in coming days but decided to start things off today with a brief chat about what I want to focus on with the blog.

So, my background - I'm Irish, studied in UCC and was quite involved in debating and drama while I was there. I studied in Boston College for a year.

When I came back, I got a job in publishing in Ireland, and then worked for Oxford University Press in the UK. Then I made the daring move back to Tipperary to work as a Parliamentary Assistant for a T.D. I've been involved in drama, politics and communications my whole life, in one way or another...

So, that's me, in summary... Wordy, studious, hard-working, passionate, intelligent, and, in a recent discovery, pretty dogged.

What do I want from the blog? Well, to hone my thinking about communications, media, politics, PR and policy by using my blog as a pensieve of sorts.

So often, in the course of working on campaign work, or communications, or PR, I find ideas jet past me or I think of examples of crisis communications or social media strategy that I want to unpack and think through.

All too often, I leave those dense clots of creative, where the real ideas are and where real value lies to examine another time, or work on later, when I have more time. No more of that, I have decided, the blog's the thing.

I'll be looking at international and Irish examples of people communicating well, or failing dismally, trying to forensically take apart some glutted examples of internal communications, or PR strategy, or creative campaigning so that I can break the case studies down and figure out how it works for me.

I find that the more I write, the better I think, the more I can. Well, the more I can...
